The Routledge Handbook of Religion, Medicine, and Health (Hardcover): Dorothea Luddeckens, Philipp Hetmanczyk, Pamela E.... The Routledge Handbook of Religion, Medicine, and Health (Hardcover)
Dorothea Luddeckens, Philipp Hetmanczyk, Pamela E. Klassen, Justin B. Stein
R6,460 Discovery Miles 64 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The relationships between religion, spirituality, health, biomedical institutions, complementary, and alternative healing systems are widely discussed today. While many of these debates revolve around the biomedical legitimacy of religious modes of healing, the market for them continues to grow. The Routledge Handbook of Religion, Medicine, and Health is an outstanding reference source to the key topics, problems, and debates in this exciting subject and is the first collection of its kind. Comprising over thirty-five chapters by a team of international contributors, the Handbook is divided into five parts: Healing practices with religious roots and frames Religious actors in and around the medical field Organizing infrastructures of religion and medicine: pluralism and competition Boundary-making between religion and medicine Religion and epidemics Within these sections, central issues, debates and problems are examined, including health and healing, religiosity, spirituality, biomedicine, medicalization, complementary medicine, medical therapy, efficacy, agency, and the nexus of body, mind, and spirit. The Routledge Handbook of Religion, Medicine, and Health is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies. The Handbook will also be very useful for those in related fields, such as sociology, anthropology, and medicine.

Alternate Currents - Reiki’s Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific: Justin B. Stein Alternate Currents - Reiki’s Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific
Justin B. Stein
R873 Discovery Miles 8 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the second half of the twentieth century, Reiki went from an obscure therapy practiced by a few thousand Japanese and Japanese Americans to a global phenomenon. By the early twenty-first century, people in nearly every corner of the world have undergone the initiations that authorize them to channel a cosmic energy—known as Reiki—to heal body, mind, and spirit. They lay hands on themselves and others, use secret symbols and incantations to send Reiki to distant recipients, and strive to follow five precepts to cultivate their spiritual growth. Reiki’s international rise and development is due to the work of Hawayo Takata (1900–1980), a Hawai‘i-born Japanese American woman who brought Reiki out of Japan and adapted it for thousands of students in Hawai‘i and North America, shaping interconnections across the North Pacific region as well as cultural transformations over the transwar period spanning World War II. Alternate Currents: Reiki’s Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific analyzes how, from her training in Japan in the mid-1930s to her death in Iowa in 1980, Takata built a vast trans-Pacific network that connected Japanese American laborers on Hawai‘i plantations to social elites in Tokyo, Hollywood, and New York; middle class housewives in American suburbs; and off-the-grid tree planters in the mountains of British Columbia. Using recently uncovered archival materials and original oral histories, Stein examines how these relationships between healer and patient, master and disciple, became deeply infused with values of their time and place and how they interplayed with Reiki’s circulation, performance, and meanings along with broader cultural shifts in the twentieth-century North Pacific. Highly readable and informative, each chapter is structured around a period in the life of Takata, the charismatic, rags-to-riches architect of the network in which Reiki spread for decades. Alternate Currents explores Reiki as an exemplary transnational spiritual therapy, demonstrating how lived practices transcend artificial distinctions between religion and medicine, and circulate in global systems while maintaining strong connections with the practices’ homeland.

R5,845 Discovery Miles 58 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book is part of a series on Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences, which has as its focus anxiety and its treatment. We have brought together a distinguished cadre of authors with the aim of covering a broad array of topics related to anxiety disorders, ranging from clinical diagnosis, epidemiology, preclinical neuroscience, and animal models to established and innovative therapeutic approaches. The book aims at bridging these disciplines to provide an update of literature relevant to understanding anxiety, its consequences, and its management. Following is a brief overview of the chapters and their content, meant to serve as a guide to navigating the book. The ?rst section covers clinical aspects of anxiety disorders. Joe Bienvenu and colleagues provide an incisive overview of diagnostic considerations in the anxiety disorders in which they emphasize the strengths and shortcomings of our current nosologic systems. This is followed by a review and update of the epidemiology of anxiety disorders by Ron Kessler and colleagues, which provides an authoritative survey of anxiety disorder incidence, prevalence, and risk factors. This is comp- mented by a comprehensive review of the literature on disorders that co-occur with anxiety disorders by Kathleen Merikangas and Sonja Alsemgeest Swanson. Their review highlights the tremendous comorbidity that occurs not only within the anxiety disorders, but also with other mental and physical health conditions.

The Psychology Industry Under a Microscope! (Hardcover, New): David B. Stein The Psychology Industry Under a Microscope! (Hardcover, New)
David B. Stein
R2,682 Discovery Miles 26 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Psychology Industry Under a Microscope! explores why psychology treatment efficacy rates are so poor, why psychological testing is unreliable, and why diagnosis is uncertain. He also explores the weaknesses inherent in 115 APA accredited doctoral programs and what changes may help improve the effectiveness of the psychology clinician. He introduces a cognitive/behavioral diagnostic system that is far more cohesive and sensible than the piecemeal and confusing system currently in place. This book introduces an easy to understand and innovative visual model that integrates all of clinical psychology and far surpasses any previous attempts at developing models. The author also challenges the recent resurgence of the disease model for diagnosis as well as the politics and economics that lie behind its current popularity. The reader may feel challenged by this book but will find it difficult to refute its content. This thought-provoking book is essential for any clinician or teacher.

Patricia Furer, John R. Walker, Murray B. Stein
R3,475 Discovery Miles 34 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Never has our culture been more aware of personal and global health hazards, from both within and without. While most people may feel some anxiety in this regard, some have an unbearable sense of dread that prevents them from functioning.

Chronic health anxiety heightened fears of illness, disease, and death is a central feature of hypochondriasis, of course, but can also present as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, and other diagnoses. Treating Health Anxiety offers the professional reader not only an understanding of this condition, but also an easily implemented cognitive/behavioral program for reducing fear of illness, overcoming the fear of death, and getting more enjoyment from life, including:

-Step-by-step coverage of the assessment process and therapy sessions

-Patient worksheets and self-monitoring forms

-Specific guidelines for treating health anxiety in children and the elderly

-Strategies for handling impasses and setbacks

-Up-to-date guide to pharmacotherapy for health anxiety.

As media attention to health issues increases, client fears of illness won t go away any time soon. Treating Health Anxiety gives prescribing and non-prescribing clinicians (as well as the counselors and social workers who encounter the problem) the tools to reduce both the fears and the medical costs that so often accompany them."

I am a Chironic astrologer. You won't find that word in the dictionary, but there are quite a few of us, and our number is increasing day by day. We are astrologers who believe that discovering the truth is more important than personal theories, and also that we should always keep our minds open to the ideas of others. By the time you finish reading this book you will know even more about what a Chironic astrologer is. Perhaps you, too, may like to become one. Who knows, perhaps you already are one. - Zane Stein

R5,765 Discovery Miles 57 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of areas known to be involved in mammalian vision. It has also seen a far greater understanding of the importance of reciprocal connections, intrinsic connections, structure-specific modules and modules which span different structures, as well as the introduction of parallel processing models within the thalamocortical and corticocortical streams.

The body of knowledge has become so vast, and is growing so rapidly, that periodic updates are essential even for experts in the field. This volume is based on a satellite meeting of an international group of researchers. It emphasizes the most current information regarding midbrain and extrastriate mechanisms underlying vision and visually-guided behavior. The book also places these data into the larger context of how interrelated components of the visual system function to produce coherent visual experiences and behavior. New research findings are presented that are unavailable elsewhere, as well as reviews and broad perspectives in which existing data from multiple sources are brought together in order to help understand the structure and function of extrageniculostriate visual areas.

Commentary on the Constitution from Plato to Rousseau (Paperback): Joshua B. Stein Commentary on the Constitution from Plato to Rousseau (Paperback)
Joshua B. Stein; Contributions by Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad
R1,877 Discovery Miles 18 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In an age where scholars, lawyers, judges and just plain folk debate the original intent of the U.S. Constitution, Commentary on the Constitution from Plato to Rousseau demonstrates that the issues confronting the founders as well as issues of understanding what the founders intended can be traced back to antiquity. Stein looks at 14 historical figures who by their words and/or deeds set the stage for political thought before the constitution was written. All the subjects of this book deal as best they can with questions of the relationship between executive and other branches of government; all deal with the role of religion in government; all deal with how much (if any) democracy should be allowed in determining fundamental law and day-to-day governance; all engaged in the thought experiment of asking what life was like before government, and therefore why government was instituted; all deal with the relationship of central authority and provincial (states') rights; all seek to avoid tyranny. Commentary on the Constitution from Plato to Rousseau is not about what the founders took from previous thinkers and political figures; it is a book that allows the reader to consider the U.S. Constitution while learning about people whose genius has transcended time, from Plato to Rousseau."

Hydrogels are three-dimensional networks composed of hydrophilic homopolymers or copolymers, able to swell in water. Due to their high water content and rubbery consistency, similar to natural tissue, as well as their biocompatability, hydrogels derived from synthetic or natural materials are used in clinical and experimental medicine for a wide range of applications, including tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (surgical sutures, artificial organs, soft tissue prostheses, soft contact lenses), membranes for biosensors, cellular immobilization, separation of biomolecules or cells (hemodialysis membranes), barrier materials to regulate biological adhesions, and drug delivery systems. Advanced drug delivery systems offer potential advantages by affording both a kinetic control by maintenance of a drug level in the therapeutically desired range and a special control by targeted delivery allowing reduction of systemic side effects. This new important book gathers the latest research from around the globe in this dynamic field.

Gordon J.G. Asmundson, G.Ron Norton, Murray B. Stein
R4,398 Discovery Miles 43 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"I was most impressed with the completeness and ease of reading of this comprehensive resource for curious students and their teachers. From formulating the research question to publication of the outcome, this reader-friendly guide outlines the key elements needed for a successful first attempt at scientific investigation. Unlike most educational manuals, this book will never become obsolete. It belongs on the bookshelves of every residency and fellowship training director, academic scientist and clinician."

? R. BRUCE LYDIARD PHD, MD,

Professor of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina

"So many students and professionals alike are terrified to try research and have no resource to help them. This book will ?demystify? the research process, thus serving this very important purpose. It is informative, easy to read, and very user friendly. A true ?paperback? research mentor?. My complements to the authors. They have taken their extensive research and clinical experience and put it in an easy-to-read guide to a very difficult topic."

? BRAD RIEMANN, Centre for Study

& Treatment of Anxiety Disorders, Oconomowoc, WI

"These authors?. all have experience with research and have trained students at all levels. They also work in ?real-world? research settings and are familiar with many of the practical problems (and solutions) with doing research in these settings?.Overall, this is a strong volume that will make a nice contribution. It is more accessible than many of the volumes on research methodology and the clinical focus will reach an important audience. The authors repeatedly ?teach by example." This is a good strategy and they generally use it effectively."

? DEBRA HOPE, University of Nebraska, Lincoln

The philosophy behind this research methods text is to provide practical, how-to guidance in an accessible format. The authors hope to reach clinical students and postdoctoral trainees at the early stages of training to muster excitement by showing that research need not be either dull or threatening. Their goal is to "demystify the research process," with a style that is informative yet easy-to-read, humorous, and user friendly. One of our reviewers puts it best when he describes the book as "a true ?paperback? research mentor." The authors hope to hook students on research early in their studies so that they see it as a natural extension of their work rather than as drudgery to be endured just to get a degree. The ultimate hope is that this will lead to more direct-care practitioners getting involved in research after they leave school. This book is also different from any other on the subject in being problem oriented. It will emphasize research methods that are appropriate to most clinical settings and will deal with many issues of clinical research that are often ignored by other research methods books.

Introduces specific methods for parents and for therapists on how to teach parents to control difficult and oppositional adolescents. The oppositional/defiant adolescent engages in behavior that can be described as abusive to and inconsiderate of other family members. Such teenagers do not typically respond well to traditional methods of psychotherapy and often therapists commit these youngsters to psychiatric hospitals. The methods introduced in this book are based on years of research and can be effectively carried out in the home setting, removing the need for hospitalization. Simple rules of conduct and clear expectations for the teen's behavior are established at the beginning. Enforcement of these rules is carried out by systematically controlling the teen's economic resources (The Real Economy System for Teens.) This book addresses a very important subject: the relationship of bilingual education to power politics in the US from 1880 to the present. Of particular interest is discussion of the impact of Reagan appointees in the Department of Education on bilingual programs ... no other book has attempted to link language to politics in the US in as explicit a manner. Especially for those not familiar with the history of language relations in the US, it provides an introduction to the subject. . . . "Choice"
